Experimenting with Geopolymers

Researching Sustainable Materials for Creative Practices
This research explores how materials are selected, evaluated, and used in creative practices, with a focus on sustainability and ethical responsibility. As material availability becomes increasingly limited and the need to reduce CO₂ emissions grows, creative practitioners will face new challenges in choosing and working with materials. The research aims to develop a framework for evaluating sustainable and ethical material choices within studio-based practices.
The research is grounded in experimentation with geopolymers in a ceramics studio, exploring their potential as more sustainable alternatives for creative practice. Alongside material development and testing, the study gathers insights from creative practitioners, students, and educators through interviews and surveys. By combining material experimentation with practice-based perspectives, the research seeks to support more informed and responsible material choices in the creative field.
This project is funded by the Research Council of Finland (2026 – 2029).

Explore the materials at the heart of our research—from ceramic and glass waste to experimental geopolymer samples. Through studio-based experimentation, we investigate how material composition and making processes shape texture, form, and possibilities for creative practice.
This page brings together material studies, process documentation, and emerging observations, sharing both the possibilities and limitations encountered along the way.
